Justine Henin faces Tsvetana Pironkova in the first round of the French Open

Justine Henin makes her first return to Roland Garros since her comeback, and will be determined to recreate the performances that enabled her to win this event on four previous occasions. She is amongst the favourites here, and is hoping to put a first round defeat in the WTA Madrid Masters against eventual winner Aravane Rezai behind her.

Despite the result in Madrid, Henin has played well on clay so far this season, managing to win the WTA Stuttgart Open title in April. On her day, she is the best clay court player on the tour, and she has a chance to prove this in France this fortnight.

Her opponent, Tsvetana Pironkova, is a young up-and-comer who has achieved some good results this season. She is currently fiftieth in the Race rankings, and beginning to make a name for herself. However, she’ll probably need to do something special today in order to progress to the second round.

Henin’s return to Roland Garros makes this year’s event even more exciting. Today’s match will be a good test for Henin, and provides a good opportunity for her to prove to the rest of the field that she has it in her to win this event yet again.
