Justine Henin looks to cement her remarkable Australian Open run by reaching the final.
Fairytale comebacks are all the rage at the moment. Just as Kim Clijsters was the story of the 2009 US Open, Justine Henin has been the talk of the 2010 Australian Open with the Belgian looking to repeat her 2004 triumph in just her second tournament back.
Things have been far from easy for Henin. Elena Dementieva blocked her path in round two and it took a gritty performance to see her off 7-5, 7-6 and then the in-form Nadia Petrova presented a similarly tough obstacle in the quarter-finals. Petrova had just seen off Clijsters and Kuznetsova but she was denied by Henin in another tough 7-6, 7-5 battle.
Henin has actually struggled the most when she’s been the favourite in matches which could be promising for Jie Zheng as Henin will most definitely be the favourite for this one.
Henin was close to defeat against Alisa Kleybanova in the third round and looked in dire straits for a while against Yanina Wickmayer a while later but found her way through both matches.
Zheng has not required to beat a top ten player to get this far but has made assured progress through the rounds, notching an impressive win over Marion Bartoli before destroying Maria Kirilenko 6-1, 6-3 in the quarter-finals.
It’s her second grand slam semi-final so it is unlikely she will be overawed. However it appears to be Henin’s destiny to go all the way in this tournament.
Henin is 1/4 favourite with Sky Bet but if you reckon Zheng could spoil the dream, she’s 18/5 with Boylesports.
