Justine Henin reached the third round of the Australian Open 2010 on Wednesday and in the process showed why she is a contender to win this year's Women's singles.
The Belgian, who Oddspreview.com picked out before the tournament as one to watch out for, displayed the kind of form which earned her seven Grand Slam titles as she beat Elena Dementieva in one of the games of the tournament so far.
Henin beat the Russian 7-5 7-6, with Dementieva admitting after the match that she let the unseeded former world number one dicate the pace of the game.
“I think I just let her play that aggressively today. You know, I was not playing deep enough," said Dementieva. "So I just let her dictate the whole game. That's not the way I was planning to go, you know, on the court.
“I feel like I was not aggressive enough. I was not playing deep enough. You know, if you look at the statistic, I was not able to make winners, which I usually do. I mean, she was playing well.
"But I feel like I gave her the opportunity to play that well. I think she was playing very well. You know, she was moving well, hitting hard. You know, just doesn't feel like she had the break."
The number five seed had her moments and probably should have done enough to take the game to a third set. But while the record books will state that Dementieva’s defeat was an upset, it certainly shouldn't be viewed as one.
Justine Henin will have to work hard to ensure she reaches the final stages of the tournament, but there's no doubting that the 7/2 chance is well and truly a contender for the title in Melbourne.
