Justine Henin survived a major scare in an epic quarter-final at the Brisbane International.
All had seemed fairly simple for the Belgian on her comeback as she waltzed into the last eight. Hungarian seventh seed Melinda Czink was not going to fold over easily.
Czink pushed the seven time grand slam champion all the way in their 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(5) epic.
Both players made a fairly slow start as the match opened with five straight service breaks before Henin took control and raced through it in 31 minutes. Czink hit back taking the second set and going up an immediate break in the third.
The pendulum swung again as Henin reeled off four games to lead 4-1 but she then dropped serve and the match was wide open again. Czink desperately fought off three match points at 5-6 to force a tiebreak and then saved two more in the breaker before Henin ripped a forehand cross-court winner to seal victory.
Henin was all smiles afterwards, saying the match was just what she needed to fine-tune her game after 20 months away from the tour.
“It’s a perfect preparation for me,” Henin said. “It’s exciting to be able to play so many good matches and now Ana – that is the kind of match that I love, it’s a great feeling.”
“I came here to play matches and that’s what I have done so I have no complaints. I don’t have much rest between matches that is for sure, the scheduling is a little strange but I am ready for this.”
