Jurgen Melzer will be hoping to improve on his Toronto showing against Santiago Giraldo in Cincinnati tonight.

After a successful series of results on the clay in July, Melzer was brought swiftly down to earth with an opening day exit against Canadian wildcard Peter Polansky at the Rogers Cup. This is never a particularly fruitful period of the year for Melzer but he would have hoped to beat a player ranked several hundred places lower who had been struggling on the challenger circuit.

Giraldo has also been struggling on the hard courts, losing all three of his matches in the States so far this summer. He was beaten 6-1, 6-0 by Janko Tipsarevic in Los Angeles and although he put up more of a fight in Toronto he still went down 7-6, 7-5 to Michael Llodra.
