Jurgen Melzer and Nicolas Almagro will meet on Thursday for what promises to be a third round thriller at the Monte Carlo MastersYou can watch and bet on the action from the ATP Monte Carlo Open at bet365Jurgen Melzer recovered from a set down against Robin Haase in his Monte Carlo opener to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Despite the shaky start from the Austrian, his performance in the final two sets suggests that the seventh seed could be a real threat in this competition. Despite this, he faces a challenging third round tie against Nicolas Almagro.
As the ninth seed, Almagro narrowly avoided being awarded a bye in round one. He began his run here with a confident victory over fellow countryman Marcel Granollers, but then ran into trouble aganst Maximo Gonzalez in the second round. Despite entering the match as the clear favourite, Almagro was pushed deep into a third set, before eventually clinching a 6-7(6), 7-5, 7-6(10) win.
Melzer has a 1-1 head to head record against Almagro, following two showdowns last season. Melzer defeated Almagro on home soil in Vienna on a hard court, whilst Almagro thrashed Melzer in Spain on a clay court. It seems more likely that the playing surface, rather than the backing of the home crowd, was a decisive factor in both matches. Melzer happens to be the higher seeded contestant here, but Almagro will start the match as the favourite.
