Jurgen Melzer and Florian Mayer will meet on Wednesday in the second round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia

Jurgen Melzer has been playing reasonably well of late, but is still searching for his first ATP World Tour title of the season. The world No. 8 isn’t amongst the favourites here in Rome, but appears to stand a decent chance of stringing together a few victories. Whilst he lost his first match in Madrid last week, the Austrian beat Roger Federer earlier in the season on clay, and might be worth keeping an eye on.

Melzer will begin his charge for the title here with a second round match against Florian Mayer of Germany. Mayer is the world No. 28, and has been in impressive form this year. To date, he has a 20-12 season record. Mayer reached the final in Munich at the beginning of the month, and has already outlined his clay court credentials. This could be a difficult match for Melzer.

Whilst both of these players have been on the tour for years, this will be the first official contest between them. Melzer is arguably the favourite, though Mayer isn’t an ideal opponent for him to start the competition against. This is a match that could go right down to the wire, and it will be interesting to see who leaves the court with the victory.
