Juan Martin Del Potro plays Gilles Simon in one of Sunday's particularly intriguing US Open third round matches.
2009 champion Del Potro has been happy to coast under the radar in the bottom half of the draw and after two emphatic straight sets wins, a quarter-final place looks on the cards for the Argentine. No one's really been talking about Del Potro as a contender but his section of the draw is very open and given Andy Murray's current form, Del Potro will fancy his chances should they meet in the last eight.
He can't afford to look any further than this match though as Simon has enjoyed a great year and is closing in on a place in the top ten again. Rankings-wise he should be the favourite for this which sounds a little strange particularly as it's been a tough old US Open for him so far. He needs five sets to get past Ricardo Mello in round one and another four to see off Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Friday.
However he shouldn't be underestimated. One of the best movers on the tour and deceptively powerful particularly with that forehand on the run as Roger Federer discovered during their five set epic at the Australian Open.
Del Potro won 7-6(8), 7-6(5), 7-5 when they met at Wimbledon and if Simon brings his 'A' game this could go five sets.
