Juan Martin Del Potro has called time on his 2010 season to focus on preparing for 2011.

2009 US Open champion Del Potro had his year pretty much wiped out by a wrist injury suffered back in January. The Argentine had surgery in May but was unable to defend his title at Flushing Meadows and eventually returned at the start of the indoor season in Asia.

Unfortunately it was soon evident that Del Potro was well short of his best and after a couple of first round defeats in Bangkok and Tokyo he decided it was best to focus on honing his game for the new year.

Del Potro had planned to compete in Vienna and Valencia but has now withdrawn from both tournaments.

"I've decided to end my 2010 season and start training for the next two months to begin 2011 in good shape,” he said in a post on twitter.

“This year was very bad, very bad. I suffered a lot. I began the Australian Open is one of the favourites with chances to be number one. Suddenly, everything collapsed. I went several months without getting a proper diagnosis."
