Despite some inconsistency and injury in the latter part of 2009, the US Open champion is dangerous in 2010.

Unlike a few other top 10 players on tour, Juan Martin Del Potro has youth on his side and that makes him a big threat on tour in 2010.  He already has the 'monkey off of his back' as he has a Grand Slam to his credit and he should be expected to win more.

Here are Del Potro's odds to win each of the four Grand Slams next season:

Australian Open: +500 (5/1), Blue Square
French Open: +500 (5/1), Sky Bet
Wimbledon: +1200 (12/1), Paddy Power
US Open: +350 (7/2), Paddy Power

The Wimbledon odds might seem tempting because they are so long but based on Del Potro's results at the All England Club, they should not be bet.  He has shown steady improvement in all Slams over the past four years EXCEPT for Wimbledon, where he has gone out in the second round each of three times he has played the event.

The US Open is still way too far away to bet, except for at long odds, but the Australian Open and French Open are still worth considering.

Here are Del Potro's results at those events over the years:

Australian Open: 2nd round (2007, 2008), quarterfinals (2009)
Roland Garros: 1st round (2006, 2007), 2nd round (2008), semifinals (2009)

Expect Del Potro to hang around the draws late at both the Aussie and the French, but he's a bigger threat to win in Roland Garros than in Melbourne. Del Potro was very close to winning the 2009 French Open as he forced a 5th set in the semis against eventual champion Roger Federer.  Losing that deciding set may have been all that prevented Del Potro from taking down the French as he likely would have defeated Robin Soderling in the finals.

Our recommendation is to pound Del Potro for the 2010 French Open.
