Juan Martin Del Potro, a recent clay court titlist from ATP Estoril, missed the 2010 French Open as his wrist injury kept him sidelined for most of 2010.

The Argentine, however, is back in action at the clay court Slam, a tournament where he made the semifinals in 2009 before losing to Roger Federer, the eventual champion that year.

Del Potro opened his efforts at Roland Garros on Monday with a four sets victory over the always dangerous Ivo Karlovic. Del Potro lost the first set in the match however he came back after that and posted a 6-7, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 victory to advance to the second round where he will face Blaz Kavcic.

Delpo's aspirations at the 2011 French Open might have a lid on them as the Argentine is in the same section of the draw as Novak Djokovic. If both players won their second round matches, Del Potro would face Djokovic in the third round and that would likely bring to an end the Argentine's tournament.

He cannot be entirely written off of course but Del Potro, in order to beat Djokovic, would have to find the tennis that won him the 2009 US Open and he does not appear likely to do that against the irreproachable form that Djokovic has displayed for five months now.

On the positive side, even if Del Potro suffers an elimination in the third round he'll still turn a net gain of 90 ranking points for the effort and that could help him improve his seeding, just a little bit, ahead of Wimbledon 2011.
