John McEnroe thinks that Andy Murray needs to be more positive if he's to win a first Grand Slam title in 2012.

"You can't afford to waste energy, the game is so physical now," McEnroe said. "It's difficult to wrestle with the demons inside. I was someone who went through periods of negative energy which helped [my opponents] and hurt me."

"The fact [Murray] was knocking on the door all the time [in 2011] makes you more optimistic he'll finally get the breakthrough. But seeing the way he reacted [at big moments] made me worried whether he'd be able to handle it all the way through - to get through a Nadal and a Federer, a Nadal and a Djokovic... is obviously extremely difficult."

Murray will be looking to reach his third straight Australian Open final in January. The Brit has made three Grand Slam finals so far, two in Australia and one at the US Open, losing twice to Roger Federer and once to Novak Djokovic.

It is widely believed that Murray's best chance of success will come on hard courts. He has made three semi-finals at Wimbledon and one at Roland Garros but Rafael Nadal has consistently proved to be his nemesis.
