Crowd favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga produced a powerful display to reach the second round.

Tsonga made light of a potentially tricky encounter against Sergiy Stakhovsky, winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Stakhovsky was breaks up in the first and second sets but Tsonga bounced back each time, feeding off the crowd’s energy and producing some spectacular athleticism to hunt down balls and strike winners on the run.

Another fan favourite round here, 2006 runner-up Marcos Baghdatis was in fine form brushing aside Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi 6-2, 6-4, 6-4. Baghdatis is on a hot streak having won the Medibank International last week and he overwhelmed Lorenzi in front of his huge band of vocal supporters.

James Blake is one of the most dangerous floaters this year and he set up a cracking second round against Juan Martin Del Potro after defeating the veteran Arnaud Clement 7-5, 7-5, 6-2. Clement made the Auckland final last week and this one looked as if it might go either way but Blake blasted 40 winners to take charge.
