Jie Zheng of China defeated Maria Kirilenko easily in a quarterfinal match from the Australian Open and in doing so, Zheng advanced to her second ever Grand Slam semifinal. The score in the matced ended up being 6-1, 6-3.
The loss for Kirilenko eliminates her from the Australian Open but since she was ranked outside of the top 50, a quarterfinal exit will go a long way to helping her raise her ranking.
For Zheng, the semifinals is likely her last stop in Melbourne as she will draw the winner of the Justine Henin vs Nadia Petrova match. However, based on the determination and will power Zheng has shown this year at the Aussie, she does stand a fighting chance no matter who she plays.
Even if Zheng falters in the semis, by making the Australian Open semifinals she will receive a windfall of tour ranking points that will catapult her well above her current ranking of 35th. She has set herself up quite nicely to have a successful 2010 tennis season and should be seeded in the French Open, Wimbledon, and likely even the US Open now.
