Jankovic may be world number five at the moment but she's been in a severe form slump ever since her injury at Wimbledon. The Serb arrives in New York desperately seeking wins after a dire summer stretch in which she lost in the first round at San Diego and Montreal and went out in the second atCincinnati and Portoroz.

She will be hoping that her good vibes from New York in the past (she came runner-up two years ago) will help her rediscover the rhythm which she so desperately lacks right now.
However 18 year old Halep will be a tricky initial opponent. The Romanian won the French Open juniors two years ago and rose to world number one in the junior rankings. She's just starting to make a breakthrough on the main tour and cracked the top 100 this year.

However Halep is at her best on clay and has struggled on the faster hard courts this summer, failing to make it through qualifying in New Haven, Montreal or Cincinnati.
