Ivan Ljubicic sends past champion Novak Djokovic crashing out of Indian Wells

Ivan Ljubicic reached his fourth quarter-final in Indian Wells with a shock straight sets win over Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic beat the Croatian last month in Dubai but appeared to run out of gas after a heavy schedule over the past six weeks. While most of the other top players took an extended break after the Australian Open, Djokovic competed in Rotterdam, Dubai and then a draining Davis Cup tie against the United States.

It all took its toll, something Djokovic admitted after the match. “This is a tournament where I definitely didn't feel comfortable on the court,” he said. “It's not because of the tournament itself. It's just because I had a very tiring couple of weeks coming from Davis Cup, which was emotionally very exhausting for me.”

After falling 3-1 behind early on, Ljubicic hit back, reeling off the next five games and he didn’t look back to seal a 6-3, 7-5 win.

“My serve helped me, especially in difficult moments,” Ljubicic said. “I felt in the second set I was serving even better than the first set. You can't beat Novak only with a serve, but it does help you a lot if you can get a lot of free points off that shot.”
