Only two players separate the two players in the ATP Rankings, and both players have comparable win/loss records for the 2011 season (Dodig 25/24, Fognini 25/26).
Dodig’s game is arguably better suited to the hard courts, and this might make all of the difference on Tuesday. The Croat’s recent form has been poor though, and he’ll need to get out of this rut as quickly as possible. It should be noted that Fognini isn’t enjoying a particularly successful tail end of the season either.
The winner of this matchup will take on world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the second round. This appears to be a daunting draw, but after Djokovic’s withdrawal in Basel there’s a chance that one of these players has a chance of getting through round two. The Serb will be anxious about aggravating his shoulder injury prior to the ATP World Tour Finals at the end of the month.
