An inspired performance from David Nalbandian and Eduardo Schwank saw Argentina dominate Saturday's doubles rubber to take the Davis Cup final into a third day.
No team has recovered from a 2-0 deficit to win the Davis Cup final for 72 years but if Spain thought Argentina would roll over easily after conceding both the opening day's singles rubbers, they were wrong.
The Davis Cup has brought the best out of Nalbandian over the years and it proved so again. Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez were poor, Verdasco in particular contributing to their downfall with a ton of unforced errors, but they were getting nothing out of Nalbandian and Schwank.
The Argentine duo swept to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory, breaking serve five times and afterwards they were upbeat about the monumental challenge which still awaits them on Sunday.
“We played a great game. We’re in very good shape, and the series is still alive,” Nalbandian said. “Our hope is intact.”
In contrast Lopez was dismayed at his inability to produce his best on the day, saying afterwards, “Today was one of those days I’d like to forget. It was my worst ever Davis Cup match.”
