Greg Rusedski is being lined up as the next British Davis Cup captain after the GB team’s disastrous defeat to Lithuania.

Rusedski is 4/6 odds on favourite with Paddy Power to take the role followed by Tim Henman at 6/4.

The pressure is growing on current captain John Lloyd to either resign or be pushed after an unprecedented streak of five straight defeats. Consecutive losses to such minnows as Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania has heaped embarassment on British tennis and left the GB team on the brink of relegation to Euro-African Zone three.

Rusedski has made no secret of the fact that he desperately wants the role and if the LTA offer it to him he will almost certainly take it. That seems increasingly likely now especially given that the Times revealed earlier this week that the LTA have already opened talks with Rusedski.

Rusedski and Henman are the most obvious names in the mix at the moment but there is the possibility that a high profile coach like Paul Annacone or Mark Petchey could be brought in. Annacone is 4/1 and Petchey is 12/1 to take the role, both with Paddy Power.

Outsiders are Pat Cash at 20/1 and John McEnroe is a particular long shot at 125/1.

Our recommendation is that it almost certainly looks like Rusedski will step in so the big money should be going on him at 4/6.

He already works with several of the players in the mix for the Davis Cup squad and given that the LTA have already made an initial approach this is a very safe bet.

Paddy Power spokesman Roberto Coladangelo said, “In terms of competing in the Davis Cup GB tennis is at an all time low. If the LTA do take the decision to appoint a new captain it looks like either Greg or Tim will be getting the call.”
