French favourite Gael Monfils reached the French Open quarter-finals for a showdown with Roger Federer after a tidy straight sets victory over an unimpressive Andy Roddick.
For the second year in a row Monfils has reached the last eight at Roland Garros and he did so in some style with a strong 6-4 6-2 6-3 victory.
Roddick looked frustrated for much of the match, Roddick having a running battle with umpire Eric Molina over the state of the light in Paris.
Roddick was convinced the match should have been suspended in the second set and his best run at the French Open ended in disappointing fashion as he lost in under two hours.
Having lost a close first set, Roddick appeared to lose focus and became agitated with the conditions.
Monfils broke serve in the third and fifth games of the second sec to take control and closed out the set when Roddick threw three break points in the eighth game.
Monfils led 1-0 in the third set before Roddick responded with his only break of serve of the contest. However it was a temporary reprieve as Monfils immediately returned the compliment to edge ahead.
From then on Roddick seemed to accept his fate and he eventually bowed out after netting a volley, leading a delighted Monfils to celebrate with his home crowd.
