Federer had looked in command of the early exchanges of the 2011 French Open final, taking a commanding looking 5-2 lead in the opening set. Nadal cannot, however, be discounted and the world number one fought back to win the next seven games and take the first set and the opening two games in the second.
That put the Spaniard firmly in the driving set and Federer simply couldn't cope as Nadal's forehand began to wear him down. The Swiss was making a number of errors off his backhand but he managed to stay in touch due to some accurate serving.
He was rewarded in the eighth game of the set, when he broke back to make it 4-4 but Nadal simply upped the tempo in the next game it make it 5-4. Nadal's next service game was interrupted by rain at 40-40 and it was Federer who profited from the delay, coming out after a 10 minute interval to claim a break of serve.
The set then went to a tie-break and it managed to get away from the world number three very quickly, with Nadal comfortably racing into a 4-0 lead then serving out to take the breaker 7-3.
