French Open Tuesday roundup

Tuesday’s French Open matches brought us plenty of surprises, the biggest of which being Roger Federer’s elimination at the hands of Robin Soderling. With the tournament seriously hotting up, we saw many of the games biggest names face major tests of their title credentials, and a few of them buckled.

The aforementioned Federer defeat was yesterday’s headline grabber. The Swedish world number seven, Robin Soderling, finally managed to record his first win against the world number one, having had twelve unsuccessful previous attempts. Soderling has been steadily improving in recent years, and is now perhaps the biggest obstacle to Rafael Nadal’s title challenge.

In the other men’s quarterfinal match, Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic completely took apart Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. Berdych has been consistently brilliant so far, and has already defeated John Isner and Andy Murray here in straight sets. Berdych has often been criticized for being a bottler when the Slam’s reach the latter stages, though currently he seems to playing like a man possessed.

In the women’s draw, the world number three Caroline Wozniacki suffered a straight sets defeat against Francesca Schiavone. Schiavone has finally made a Slam semi final, and it’s fitting that it should finally happen at Roland Garros, a tournament that she claims to have a real fondness for. Schiavone won 6-2, 6-3, and may even go one step further if she continues playing so well.

Elsewhere, Elena Dementieva finished Nadia Petrova’s winning streak in France with a three set victory (2-6, 6-2, 6-0). Petrova will be disappointed to have fallen apart so badly in the second and third sets, especially after having won the opener so comfortably.

In today’s men’s quarterfinal matches, Nicolas Almagro faces Rafael Nadal, whilst Jurgen Melzer takes on Novak Djokovic. In the women’s draw, Serena Williams faces Samantha Stosur, and Jelena Jankovic meets Yaroslava Shvedova. We should be in for some compelling action.
