Francesca Schiavone meets Elena Dementieva in the semi finals of the French Open

Francesca Schiavone’s victory over Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals of the French Open made her the first Italian woman to make the semi finals of a Grand Slam event since the Open Era began. Schiavone will be giving it her all to try and break more records, and now faces a crunch match against Elena Dementieva in the semi finals.

Schiavone is twenty-nine, and perhaps doesn’t have too many years left near the top of the rankings. However, she seems to be playing superbly, and has fully merited her position in the semis. Her 6-2, 6-3 win against the number three seed Wozniacki fully demonstrated her title credentials. Although her opponent today, Elena Dementieva, is a tough opponent, Schiavone is in with an outside chancing of lifting the trophy here at Roland Garros.

Dementieva is likely to put up a spirited fight today. She bounced back from a first set loss to dismantle Nadia Petrova in the quarterfinals (2-6, 6-2, 6-0), and will make Schiavone work hard for almost every point. Dementieva is perhaps the favourite today, though Schiavone’s prowess on clay means that we’re in for an intense and significant match.

The winner of this match will face either Jelena Jankovic or Samantha Stosur in the final. The final will be a very tough match regardless of who wins the Jankovic v Stosur tie.
