The young American continues to search for a solid Grand Slam result after making the quarters of the 2009 US Open.
Francesca Schiavone is the defending champion at the French Open this week and she opened her title defense on Monday with a straight sets victory over American Melanie Oudin. The result of the match never appeared to be in serious doubt as Schiavone, the reigning Queen of Clay, cruised to victory in the first round contest.
Oudin, best known for making the quarterfinals of the 2009 US Open in Flushing Meadows, has never won a match in the main draw for Roland Garros although Monday's match represented just her second career appearance in the event.
She continues to struggle in Grand Slam matches since Flushing Meadows 2009 as she only has two individual Grand Slam match-wins since that tournament.
Schiavone does not appear to be threatened in the next round either as the Italian, who is the five seed at this year's French Open, awaits the winner between Anne Keothavong of Britain and Vesna Delonts of Russia. Neither of those players has a career match-win at Roland Garros in their careers and expecting one of them to defeat the defending champion is too much to ask for.
