Having overtaken Andy Roddick in the world rankings, Mardy Fish has become the American No. 1You can watch and bet on the action from this week’s ATP Miami Open at bet365Mardy Fish has become America’s top ranked player, after climbing above Andy Roddick in the world rankings. Fish has been enjoying one of the best periods of his career, and his victory over David Ferrer in the quarter-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open has ensured that he will be ranked 11th at lowest by the end of the tournament.
Roddick on the other hand lost his first match in the competition, and will drop to 14th. At the age of 29, this is a slightly unexpected achievement for Fish, but surely a welcome one. He will now be hoping to push on and challenge for the title in Miami in front of a supportive crowd.
When questioned about becoming America’s No. 1, Fish remained modest. “With Andy and the career he’s put together, it would be pretty tough to feel I was the No. 1 American…He’s won so many more matches, so many more tournaments, so many more Davis Cup matches. So I don’t think I would ever feel like the No. 1.”
