Fernando Verdasco faces Leonardo Mayer in the semi finals of the ATP Nice Open

Fernando Verdasco is the only unseeded player left in the ATP Nice Open this year, and goes into his semi final match against Leonardo Mayer as the clear favourite. Verdasco has been on top form all season, and is attempting to reach his fourth ATP World Tour final of the year.

Verdasco comes into this match with a 17-4 record on clay, and is one win away from being only the third player this season to have claimed thirty victories this year. Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer alone have achieved this feat so far, in what has been a good year for Spanish tennis.

Verdasco is the clear favourite here, and may even win in straight sets. He won the only previous match between these two 6-1, 6-1, though this match was on a hard court. Nonetheless, expect Verdasco to be too much for Mayer today.

Verdasco has already won two titles this season, and is currently ranked ninth in the world. Theoretically, this is his match to lose, but with Roland Garros approaching there’s a slight chance that he might take his eye off of the ball a little. This could be a very good match, but Verdasco will take this one with ease if he’s at his best.
