Fernando Verdasco has been in very good form recently, and stands a decent chance of making the latter stages in this year’s French Open. He would have won last week’s ATP Nice Open had it not been for a tenacious performance from Richard Gasquet in the final, and performances in Nice enabled him to become only the third player on the tour to win thirty matches this season. This bodes well for this fortnight’s action.
Verdasco wasted no time in getting to the second round here, defeating Igor Kunitsyn of Russia in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. Verdasco put in a confident performance against Kunitsyn, and lived up to his billing as the number seven seed for this year’s French Open.
He faces Florent Serra of France, who is currently ranked sixty-seventh in the world. Verdasco is the favourite in this match, and has a 4-1 head to head record against Serra. One of these matches occurred last week on the aforementioned clay-courts of Nice, where Verdasco trouced Serra 6-2, 6-2.
This match is Verdasco’s to lose, and it will be exciting to follow his progress this week. He currently looks very solid, and a relatively successful French Open may see him edge towards the top five. Serra needs to do play a lot better than he did in his last match against Verdasco, or this match wont go beyond three sets.
