Roger Federer will end his month long layoff and return to the tour in Basel next week.
Federer pulled out of ATP Tokyo and the Shanghai Masters a few weeks ago citing fatigue. After a relentless summer which saw him regain his Wimbledon crown, win the Cincinnati Masters and reach the US Open final again, the Swiss simply needed a break and the chance to spend time with his young family.
"I've been back practising and training now for some time and all is going well", said Federer. "I feel much better. I'm looking forward to playing my hometown tournament in Basel."
Basel is a tournament which has always held a special place in Federer’s heart. He made the final twice as a young upcoming player, in 2000 and 2001 but he had to wait five more years to get his hands on the winner’s trophy, defeating Fernando Gonzalez in an entertaining 2006 final. Since then Federer has been unstoppable in his home town, winning the tournament for the past three years, beating David Nalbandian in last year’s final.
Federer has been thoroughly enjoying his time away from the tennis court, "I've had a chance to spend some amazing time with my family,” he said. “Myla and Charlene are doing great."
