Gulbis is the world number 28 after a strong clay court season but so far his tennis has failed to catch fire on the US hard courts. He crashed out in the Los Angeles second round and made another early exit in Washington.
Bellucci is being heralded as a new Gustavo Kuerten in his home country, the 22 year old left-hander up to 27 in the world on the back of some strong performances on clay earlier this year – he won the Santiago title and reached the fourth round of the French Open.
The Brazilian can also play on hard courts and he made the fourth round in Miami. Gulbis' season promised much earlier this year but an injury suffered at the French Open appears to have set him back considerably and he's in another of his slumps so Bellucci looks like the best bet to go through to play Robin Soderling in round two.
