Ernests Gulbis sort of disappeared on tour for a little while but he has made the scene once again as the Latvia made a great showing at the Rome Masters.
Gulbis is now in the top 10, not on the ATP tour, but in the French Open 2010 futures market and that is for three reasons:
(1) He eliminated Roger Federer in the second round.
(2) He advanced to his first Masters Series 1000 semifinal.
(3) He took a set off of Rafael Nadal on clay.
The latter accomplishment is actually the most impressive as Nadal was steam rolling everyone in every set played in the last two events. Gulbis has proven that he is force on clay and at 21 years of age he should be crowding the top 20 on tour soon.
Gulbis is so new to big time tennis matches that many sportsbooks are actually spelling his name wrong (it's Ernests not Ernest) however they will definitely start getting it right especially if Gulbis makes the semis in Roland Garros.
At present you can get Gulbis at +5000 (50/1; bet365) in the outright winner's market for the 2010 French Open and that is certainly a recommendable price for the Latvian as it appears likely to shorten. Gulbis did make the quarters of the French Open in 2008 so he is not without some valuable experience in the clay court Grand Slam.
