Nadia Petrova had an unenviable draw for the fourth round at this year’s French Open, as she was pitted against an in form Venus Williams. Williams went into this tournament with a slight chance of claiming the world number one ranking spot from her sister Serena. However, this was not to be, as Serena is still in the draw, and Petrova managed to eliminate Venus on Sunday in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Petrova has shown real grit and determination in Paris, and also fended off three match points against Aravane Rezai in the third round. Petrova is beginning to emerge as a serious challenger here, having dispatched both of the finalists of this month’s WTA Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open.
Today Petrova faces the number five seed Elena Dementieva, in a potentially nail biter. Amazingly, the pairing have a 7-7 head to head record, and are 2-2 on clay. This quarterfinal match is therefore an extremely difficult one to predict, though Dementieva may be the favourite, albeit by a slight margin.
We should be in for one of the best matches of the tournament here, if the closeness of this rivalry is reflected in today’s match. With a place in the French Open semi finals at stake, both players should be one hundred percent focused, and prepared to put on an incredible showdown.
