Dementieva was delighted with a shock 7-5, 6-2 win over US Open finalist and second seed Vera Zvonareva in Thursday's quarters. Zvonareva started brightly but was left regretting blowing a 5-3 first set lead. For Dementieva it was her best performance for some time, she knew she had to play aggressive tennis and go for broke at times and she executed her game plan perfectly.

Schiavone edged a marathon tussle against Kaia Kanepi 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in over three hours. She was relieved to get through after missing match point at 5-4 in the third but maintained her composure to seal victory two games later. 

These two have quite a history having played eleven times since the 2002 US Open with Dementieva narrowly leading 6-5. She beat the Italian three times from 2008 to 2010, winning 6-2, 7-5 in Sydney at the start of the year. However Schiavone took the last one in the French Open semi-finals where Dementieva retired having lost the first set 7-6.

"Every time we meet we have a great battle and know each other's games very well," Dementieva said. "Last time we played at the French Open, it ended in disappointing circumstances for me. But injuries are a part of this game. We both had tough matches today so recovery will be a big part of our preparation. I'm sure we'll both be very motivated to win tomorrow."
