Elena Dementieva takes on Flavia Pennetta for a place in the quarters of the Toray Pan Pacific Open.

Dementieva, the 2006 Tokyo champion, could hardly have been more dominant in her 6-0, 6-1 round two demolition of Yaroslava Shvedova in just 51 minutes. With rain disrupting play, she relished the chance to play under the roof on centre court, making the most of the quick conditions.

"It was a nice and quick match," Dementieva said. "I played very aggressively and consistently the whole match. It's always good to get into a rhythm. There are a few big tournaments left so I want to play my best - no matter how well you do in the beginning of the year, it's always good to have a strong finish."

The Olympic champion has come no closer to ending her slam duck this year, coming closest at the French Open where she had to retire after a set of her semi-final against eventual winner Francesca Schiavone.

Since then Dementieva has been somewhat eclipsed by Vera Zvonareva. If she gets past Pennetta, she will probably get a shot at Zvonareva in the quarters here. Dementieva will be favourite against the Italian who did not look particularly impressive in a scrappy three set win over Maria Kirilenko in round two.
