Legg Masn Classic top seed Andy Roddick strolled into round three of the tournament in Washington DC as several other seeds were sent crashing.

Roddick beat Germany's Benjamin Becker with a comfortable scoreline of 6-3 6-2.

Roddick was making his return following a four-week lay-off after injuring his hip during his epic five-set Wimbledon final defeat by Roger Federer.

"I wanted to work my way into the match, get some rallies going and try to do the basics well," said the world number five.

However, when asked if he felt comfortable on the courts after his victory Roddick replied:

"I didn't serve very well, but if there's one thing that's a little rusty that I'm not worried about coming around, it's my serve."

Andy Roddick will next face fellow American Sam Querrey, who beat Igor Kunitsyn of Russia 6-3 6-4, in the third round.
