This week’s action in Valencia will be crucial in deciding who gets the final two Masters Cup places.

Ranked seven in the world, Davydenko is in pole position to qualify and if he fulfills his seeding this week (he’s seeded second behind Andy Murray) and makes the final then his place will almost be certain.

He got himself off to a good start earlier today with a 6-2, 6-1 first round win over Columbia’s Alejandro Falla. Davydenko’s strong returning game was in fine fettle as he broke Falla’s serve five times.

Davydenko‘s recent good form (he won the Shanghai Masters last month) has seen him reach a special milestone of 50 tour wins for the fifth straight season !

Davydenko is 3/1 with Sky Bet to win the title this week.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who currently stands just outside the qualification places at nine in the rankings has a tough opening round on Wednesday against experienced Russian Mikhail Youzhny. Tsonga is the favourite at 4/9 with Boylesports but Youzhny is very good indoors and good value for an upset at 2/1 with bet365.

Gilles Simon still has a slim chance of qualifying and he starts on Tuesday against big serving Russian Igor Kunitsyn. Simon is a big favourite at 1/6 with Boylesports
