Two tennis giants, Spain and Switzerland clash in round one of the Davis Cup.

Unfortunately neither Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal are competing but the two sides are still star-studded.

However with the tie on clay, the odds are very heavily weighted in Spain’s favour.
Switzerland’s hopes will rely heavily on Stanislas Wawrinka who has kept Switzerland in and around the World Group in Federer’s absence in recent years. 

Wawrinka defeated Federer on clay last year and with his sole singles title coming on the surface, he is certainly no slouch on the red dirt. However Swiss number two Marco Chiudinelli does not share his compatriot’s clay-court prowess. Chiudinelli is at a career high ranking of 52 right now but he is at his best indoors.

Spain’s team will be led by David Ferrer, the former world number four who has just spent a month competing on clay in South America and is in a rich vein of form having won the Acapulco title and reached the final in Bueno Aires.

They will have to choose between Tommy Robredo and Nicholas Almagro for the second singles spot. The experienced Robredo is a Davis Cup stalwart and despite a poor run of form he is likely to get it. Whoever plays is likely to be strong favourite against Chiudinelli.

If Switzerland are to progress, Wawrinka is almost certainly going to have to win three matches in three days so their hopes rely on him.
