Nicholas Almagro and Stanislas Wawrinka play the first rubber in Spain’s Davis Cup World Group tie against Switzerland.

This is effectively a must-win rubber for Wawrinka. In Federer’s absence, the Swiss are relying hugely on Wawrinka this weekend, their only player with good clay court pedigree.

It is a daunting task for Wawrinka but in clay-court events he would be rated with a decent chance again any of the four players in the Spanish squad.  

Wawrinka leads 3-1 on the head-to-head against Almagro but two of those wins were many years ago in low level tier tournaments.

Both players have excellent single-handed backhands and like to take charge in the rallies with heavy, clubbing forehands. Wawrinka likes to get up the court a bit more while Almagro just pounds away from the back.

Wawrinka has not competed since the Australian Open and any rust could be brutally exposed this weekend.
