Mardy Fish looks to level the USA's Davis Cup quarter-final against Spain as he takes on David Ferrer later today.
Ferrer would have been dearly hoping that Verdasco and Granollers could do the business last night against the Bryan brothers. The Spaniards looked on course to wrap up a 3-0 win after the first set but the world's number one doubles pairing hit back to win in four.
This affects Ferrer more than most as the world number six is scheduled to compete in a clay-court event in Bastad this week. He now faces a long flight, jetlag and a rapid change from fast indoor hard courts to slow clay before his first match in a couple of days.
However for now he will be focusing on the task in hand against world number eight Fish who lost a dramatic five setter to Feliciano Lopez on Friday in just under four hours. The packed stadium was on its feet by the time Lopez prevailed 8-6 in the fifth but Fish was gutted and he will be desperate to make amends today.
He leads 4-3 on the head-to-head against Ferrer but most of those matches were between 2004 and 2007. However Fish triumphed 7-5, 6-2 when they met in Miami earlier this year and he will feel he has the game to take him down especially on a surface this quick.
