Defending Valencia Open 500 champion David Ferrer heads into this week’s competition in search of his third ATP title of the season. The world No. 5 has already qualified for the end of season Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, but he’ll be looking to maintain his impressive recent form. Had he not run into Andy Murray twice in October, he might have won two more titles this year.

Ferrer’s first opponent in Valencia will be Fernando Verdasco. The draw hasn’t been kind to the top seed, and Verdasco has enough talent to match Ferrer if he’s on song. Verdasco is ranked No. 24 in the world after a fairly successful season, and he’s going to be fired up for this competition.

With both players on home soil, this has the makings of a thrilling clash. Verdasco currently holds a 7-4 match record against Ferrer, and has won four of the last five matches between the pairing. That said, Ferrer has been playing superbly throughout 2011, and he might just have the edge this time around.
