David Ferrer has a nightmare opening draw against Washington champion David Nalbandian.

Tenth seed Ferrer was unlucky enough to bag the worst possible first round draw. Nalbandian will be the ultimate dangerous floater over the next few weeks. After two months out with injury his ranking has plummeted but the Argentine returned in Washington last week with all guns blazing. He only lost one set all week and dispatched Marin Cilic, Marcos Baghdatis and Stanislas Wawrinka all with such consumate ease that some have begun talking about his chances of contending for the title here.

Ferrer, the world number 12 is playing his second tournament of the summer after making the Bastaad semis in early July. Hard is not his favourite surface but the Spaniard is a former US Open semi-finalist.

He leads the head-to-head 6-4 against Nalbandian but the Argentine won the last two in 2007 and 2008. They did play in the Canadian Masters three years ago with Nalbandian winning 7-6, 6-1.
