Kleybanova ousted defending champion Aravane Rezai surprisingly comfortably 6-1, 6-2 in the quarters. Kleybanova's booming returns were the bedrock of her win and Rezai was never really able to settle on her serve.
"The score makes it look easy, but the match was very tough," the Russian said. "There were plenty of games with deuces and advantages so it was still a big fight, but I'm happy with the way I played. The important thing for me today was to hit big serves, step into the court and play well on the important points. That was working well. I think that's why I was able to win with this scoreline."
Hantuchova also reached the semi-finals, continuing her dominance over Yanina Wickmayer, beating the Belgian for the fifth straight time, 6-4, 7-6.
Hantuchova and Kleybanova are 1-1 on head-to-heads with Hantuchova winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in San Diego back in July.
The Slovak is expecting another tough match. "Alisa is playing very well," she said. "She beat the No.2 seed today pretty easily, and I think the court fits her aggressive game very well."
