Seasoned veterans Daniel Nestor and Nenad
Zimonjic finally managed to avenge their 2009 Roland Garros semi finals defeat
against Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes, by beating them in this year’s French
Open men’s doubles final, 7-5, 6-2. Nestor and Zimonjic have played superbly in
recent months, and have once again become the worlds number one ranked team.
Nestor and Zimonjic have now won three
Grand Slam doubles titles, having won at Wimbledon in their most recent two
attempts. They also made it to the Australian Open final this year, where they
were eventually beaten by Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan.
The match between Nestor/Zimonjic and
Dlouhy/Paes was tightly contested throughout the first set. Dlouhy and Paes had
a decent chance to break, but missed their opportunity, and may feel that
things would have gone differently had they managed to shift the momentum in
their favour. In the end, it was Nestor and Zimonjic who broke first, to earn a
6-5 lead. They served out the set and seemed to grow significantly in
confidence.
The second set began with an immediate
break for the eventual winners, and they broke again in the fifth game. They
showed great efficiency to win the second set 6-2, as Dlouhy and Paes appeared
to lose focus.
This was a great achievement for Nestor and
Zimonjic. They will now head to Wimbledon in superb form, and with a serious
chance to claim a hat-trick of Wimbledon titles.
