Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be dreaming about winning the French Open title this week in front of a home crowd, and may stand a chance if he produces his best form. He begins his campaign against world number eighty-nine Daniel Brands.

Tsonga has yet to win an ATP Tour title this year, and hasn’t managed to make it to a final either. The highlight of his season was a quarterfinal victory over Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open, though he failed to build on this, losing the next round to Roger Federer in straight sets.

Tsonga hasn’t achieved any particularly noteworthy tournament runs on clay this season either, but has recorded two decent victories against Nicolas Almagro. Tsonga has the ability to devastate opponents when he hits top gear, so shouldn’t be ignored with regards to this tournament.

His opponent today, Daniel Brands of Germany, will be aware of this, and needs to defy the odds to make it through to round two. Brands has only won one of his seven ATP World Tour matches this season, though he appears to have a bright future ahead of him.

Given the prestige of this event, it should be fascinating to see how Brands attempts to make a name for himself. However, with Tsonga playing in front of a French audience, this match looks likely to go his way.
