It has been a stunning week for Wozniacki who captured the Montreal title on Monday before heading straight to New Haven to defend her title. Her run to the final here also means that she has won the US Open Series whatever the result today, giving her the chance to win a million dollars if she goes on to win the US Open title.
Wozniacki came back from the brink to defeat Elena Dementieva 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 in the semi-finals. Wozniacki found herself 5-3 down in the final set but kept fighting and eventually edged it 7-5 in the tiebreak.
Petrova defeated Maria Kirilenko 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the 20th WTA final of her career. The powerful Russian as completely outplayed in the first set but took heart from Kirilenko taking a medical time-out and upped her aggression on the return to seize control of the match.
"When Maria called for the physio, those couple of minutes did very well for me," Petrova said. "I saw she was struggling and believed I could come back and win. I had a good conversation with my coach. I cut down on my mistakes and focused a lot on my serve. I felt I started playing the right game."
Wozniacki leads 2-1 on the head-to-head against Petrova and has beaten her twice in 2010. She won 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 on the way to the Indian Wells final and then 6-3, 6-4 on the green clay of Charleston.
