What a difference a day makes. Wozniacki looked in supreme form on Tuesday, destroying Elena Dementieva for the loss of just two games and few gave Sam Stosur much chance in their round-robin match. However the Aussie rose superbly to the challenge, saving all six break points against her and she outplayed the world number one in straight sets.
With Vera Zvonareva still with a 100% record in the Maroon Group, Wozniacki needs to win this one, not just to qualify for the knockout stages but to keep the year-end world number one ranking safe. If she loses, Zvonareva could overtake her with a win over Kim Clijsters.
Schiavone will need to bounce back from a disappointment herself. She began superbly against Stosur on Tuesday but lost her way and ended up losing 6-4, 6-4.
This will be a fascinating match-up as these two are so different in terms of playing styles. While Wozniacki is the undisputed best retriever in the game, no one uses the different spins and angles available as effectively as Schiavone.
The Italian's unorthodox approach has seen her win two of her three matches against Wozniacki but the Dane did beat her 6-3, 6-2 on the way to the Montreal title in August.
