Wozniacki had never won a match at this tournament but she broke her duck with a 6-1, 6-3 rout of qualifier Greta Arn to set up this intriguing clash with the 19 year old Russian Pavlyuchenkova, already ranked 20 in the world.
Wozniacki is still only 20 herself so this could well be a future Grand Slam final match up in the future.
Pavlyuchenkova has made big strides in the second half of this year, picking up the Istanbul title and making the semi-finals of the Premier event in Cincinnati. She was going strong at the US Open but proved too raw to take out Francesca Schiavone in the fourth round.
She has also proved too raw against Wozniacki who has beaten her already three times this year. The Dane is wary of Pavlyuchenkova's power especially on quick courts such as Tokyo but she is probably the best athlete on the tour right now and it takes more than just brute force to hit through her.
It has not really been close in any of their matches in 2010. Wozniacki won 6-2, 6-2 in Miami, 6-1, 6-3 on the green clay of Ponte Vedra beach and 7-5, 6-4 at Wimbledon.
