Caroline Wozniacki is looking to seal world number one ranking as the WTA Championships get underway in Istanbul this week.
The ultra-consistent Dane has now spent 54 weeks in total at the top of the rankings and if she wins two of her round robin matches and goes on to reach the final she will maintain her position going into 2012.
"Of course when you've been number one the whole year, you'd like to finish the last week as number one as well," Wozniacki said during the pre-tournament press conference. "That would mean a lot to me since not a lot of people have finished the year two times in a row as number one."
Wozniacki has been drawn in the Red Group alongside Vera Zvonareva, Agnieszka Radwanska and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.
Maria Sharapova is the only player with a realistic chance of overtaking Wozniacki in the rankings but she must reach the final and hope that the Dane falls early.
"I think I'm just fortunate enough to say that I'm here and I'm going to be competing. That, to me, is a big accomplishment by itself," Sharapova said. "So whether it's number one or number two, whatever it is, I'm very pleased that I made it here and that I have a chance to compete and do well."
