Caroline Wozniacki went down in three sets in the third round of the Pan Pacific Open to an inspired Kaia Kanepi.
Wozniacki's title defence didn't last too long as the top seed crashed out in three sets in the third round to Estonia's Kaia Kanepi. It's been a poor season for Kanepi who's struggled under the weight of expectation she created for herself after her runs at the slams in 2010.
However she's bounced back this week with a stunning display on Wednesday night, recovering from a break down in the final set to win 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.
"I played some good tennis in the second set and the first half of the third but then I couldn't get my serve in," Wozniacki said. "Kaia played a good match today. I'll try to do better next time."
"I'm very excited about the victory, and about how I played in the match. I really fought for it," Kanepi said. "I always believe if I play my best I can beat anyone. But I just have to make sure I'm playing my best when I go out there."
Kanepi now faces ninth seed Agnieszka Radwanska who saw off Jelena Jankovic 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
