Mello, who has been as high as 50 in the world, had to rely on a wildcard to make the main draw this week after slipping down to 138.
However he has had an excellent start to 2010 and is a good pick to score an upset against the Italian Lorenzi. Mello won the San Paulo challenger last month and upset Pablo Cuevas 7-6, 6-3 in Santiago last week before losing in the second round.
Lorenzi is ranked 86 but has yet to win a main draw match this year after four straight defeats.
