Tomic has landed one of the most intriguing first round clashes at next week's Australian Open, facing former semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco but going by his form in Kooyong this week, many would put the 19 year old star as favourite.
Tomic reached the Brisbane Open semi-finals last week and has taken out world number seven Tomas Berdych as well as Gael Monfils on the way to the final here.
Fish has rebounded from a disappointing Hopman Cup showing with a couple of decent results this week. He outplayed Milos Raonic in the opening round and then kept his focus after a testing rain delay to see off Jurgen Melzer 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
"I played well, with maybe one bad game," Fish said afterwards."You have to get used to rain delays again and it's been a while since I dealt with one. I could have shown some more energy when we came back out."
And the world number eight had plenty of praise for his young adversary's efforts. "He's got a great feel for the game. He's got all the shots. He's awkward to play and he's only going to get better," Fish said. "He has played a Wimbledon quarter-final on Centre Court. He's light years ahead of where I was when I was 19. He doesn't look 19, at least body type-wise. That's why he's able to go deep in grand slams and play ... five-set matches, match after match."
Prediction: Tomic in three.
